One hundred and forty members, neighbors, local Christian church leaders and members’ family and friends gathered in Mirpur, Dhaka, on 17 October to celebrate the opening of the new meetinghouse for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in that city.
President Steven Baroi, head of the congregation, started the evening by welcoming guests and giving a short history of the Church in Bangladesh. Afterward, guests in small groups were given a tour by members of the chapel, classrooms and baptismal font.
Visitors stopped in each area to hear local leaders give a brief description of Church organizations and answer questions. The tours ended with refreshments in the garden area on the rooftop.
The first branch of Dhaka was officially organized on March 15, 1992, with about 40 members. Members met in homes until 2012 when then congregation leader, Harold Johnson, secured a small apartment in Farmgate, Dhaka to be used as a meetinghouse. Members have faithfully gathered there for the past eight years, but due to increased attendance at meetings, the congregation needed more classrooms and a larger chapel area.
