Hostel receives donations from Latter-day Saint Charities

Lutheran and Latter-day Saint leaders came together on 8 August to celebrate a brighter future for the Ashram Girls’ Hostel, operated by Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church (A.E.L.C.) in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh.  The hostel is home to as many as 90 needy girls, the majority of whom range in age from seven to fourteen years.

Latter-day Saint Charities (LDS Charities), the humanitarian arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, donated a variety of items including 40 beds and mattresses, 50 plastic chairs, blankets, buckets, plates, schoolbags and other equipment that will make the girl’s lives more comfortable.

On hand a week earlier to unload the delivery truck and move the items into the hostel were youth from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and members of The Volunteer Company, a service organization that supports the Ashram.  For Janene G. Jolley, a humanitarian missionary for the Church who was present that night, “It was truly uplifting to see everyone working together, for a great cause.”   She added, “We are so grateful for good people who unselfishly help each other.”

Present on 8 August to commemorate the donation were Venkata Govind Srinivas Dasari, leader of a Rajahmundry congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as well as Reverend Esupadam of the A.E.L.C., Guntur Andhra Christian College Principal Dr. G. DevaKumar and Hostel Administrator Margherete Helena were also among those who joined the festivities.  The delighted girls sang, clapped and expressed their gratitude for the donations.

Here, as always, LDS Charities utilized the resources of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which include funding and local volunteer support. More than one million workdays of labor are contributed each year by volunteers in support of welfare initiatives.  Assistance is given without regard to race, religious affiliation, or nationality.
