Sunday Morning Session

Sunday morning’s session was distinctly international, reflecting a global Church. Each speaker hailed from a different country — and the prerecorded music was performed by a variety of choirs from around the world singing in their native languages.

President Russell M. Nelson anchored the Sabbath day gathering of the 191st Annual General Conference and invited everyone to increase in faith. “Through your faith, Jesus Christ will increase your ability to move the mountains in your life, even though your personal challenges may loom as large as Mount Everest.”

Elder Ulisses Soares of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and a native of Brazil, said the Savior is the caregiver of all souls and His arms is extended to all who seek Him. He said that through Christ, His followers can experience “a mighty change of mind and heart”- bringing a fresh attitude toward God and life. New Zealand native Elder S. Mark Palmer, a General Authority Seventy, said a knowledge of the Resurrection of Christ gives meaning and purpose to life. “I invite all who feel sorrow, all who wrestle with doubt, all who wonder what happens after we die, to place your faith in Christ.” Sister Reyna Isabel Aburto, a Nicaraguan and second counselor in the Relief Society general presidency taught that through the redeeming Atonement and glorious Resurrection of Jesus Christ, “broken hearts can be healed, anguish can become peace, and distress can become hope.”

A Zimbabwe native and a General Authority Seventy, Elder Edward Dube taught that individuals can face mortality’s challenges by pressing forward with faith in Heavenly Father and His Son. He invited all “to never give up.” Elder Jose A. Teixeira of the Presidency of the Seventy, a Portugal native, emphasized that knowing we are children of God is a first step to returning to our heavenly home. Jesus Christ offers protection and He ushers His followers “to the table of joyful life.” Fiji native Elder Taniela B. Wakolo, General Authority Seventy testified that “our most valuable relationships are with the Father and the Son and with our families, because our ties to them are eternal.” He taught that Heavenly Father manifests His love for His children are by providing eternal relationships, calling prophets and chastising when necessary. Elder Chi Hong (Sam) Wong, a General Authority Seventy born in Hong Kong, reminded that “we may not be able to change all of what is coming, but we can choose how we prepare for what is coming.” Philippines native, Elder Michael John U. Teh, General Authority Seventy, testified that knowing the Savior is the most important pursuit of our lives, and it is different than knowing about the Savior.

President Russell M. Nelson announced 20 new temples to be built throughout the world. “We are building now for the future.” See full list of announced temples here. Currently, 41 temples are presently under construction or renovation and ground was broken for 21 new temples last year.

President Dallin H. Oaks of the First Presidency in his remarks testified of the divinely inspired Constitution of the United States and encouraged members to uphold and defend its principles. Elder Ronald A. Rasband taught that “the Lord performs miracles to remind us of His power, His love for us, His reach from the heavens to our mortal experience, and His desire to teach of that which is of most worth.” General Authority Seventy Elder Timothy J. Dyches testified that the Savior’s spiritual light is equally as important as sunlight is for all life on Earth. The light of Christ, frequently called a conscience, leads to receiving the Holy Ghost’s influence, which is the greatest source of light from Heavenly Father in mortality.

Elder D. Todd Christofferson taught that “following the principles and commandments of the gospel of Jesus Christ day by day is the happiest and most satisfying course in life.” Elder Alan R. Walker, a General Authority Seventy serving in Guatemala, said in a prerecorded message that “As we gather on both sides of the veil, as we make sacrifices to serve and make the temple pivotal in our lives, the Lord is truly building us — He is building His covenant people.” Elder David A. Bednar invited Latter-day Saints to “learn, live and love principles of righteousness.” He testified that “only gospel truths can enable us to ‘cheerfully do all things that lie in our power’ to press forward on the covenant path and to ‘see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed.”
